Hello from Insanity Central!

Mary Connealy checking in from the mad center of my universe
I've got a sweet 90-year-old mama who's ailing.

A new granddaughter who is just precious--but seems to think crying and eating are all there is to life! C'mon kid, Grandma's old and tired--you're six weeks old, time to start playing with us--and sleeping--and listening to sweet reason when Grandma begs you to settle down!

Add in Christmas, New Years, a book to write, a book to revise and a book to release...and...well...I am full of excuses for why I am scrambling madly through life these days.

The book to release is what I'm talking about today.

I wrote a gothic romance! Yikes.

This is the most fun I've ever had writing a book...and I've had many, many great times writing, so that's saying something.

Click to Buy
But I wrote this book YEARS AGO called The Devil's Nest.
I would sit in my computer room just off the living room and write and LAUGH OUT LOUD. I mean I was CACKLING!
And the children, would come and look in the computer room with such weird expressions, like they're thinking, "Just checking to see if you need us to get a net, Mom."

The title has been changed to Loving the Mysterious Texas (Garrison's Law book #5).
Think.........Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier meets And Then There Were None by Agatha Christy
Now how could that not be fun???
But the spooky old pirate's lair is called The Devil's' Nest.
Click to Buy
Enter the sweet, innocent maiden hired to gather and make order out of the old family papers that fill the attic....for historical reasons, she's told. But the truth is, an evil family KNOWS the pirate who built the monstrosity hid his treasure somewhere in this gothic mansion.
The search is over 200 years old ever since the wife he betrayed and battered, cast herself off the roof of the house, taking her secret to the grave.

As I wrote--back then--I would think, I have to make her go into the attic while she KNOWS a murder roams the spooky old house.
Add to that, I couldn't bear to have her be an idiot.
Why would she do that? Why would she go up there alone?
Only an idiot would go up there alone? If she goes up there alone she deserves to die just so she doesn't have children and weaken the herd!
Did I mention the hero was called away from the house?
Did I mention the hero might be the killer?
How about...the electricity is off? I don't think the idiot even had a candle!
Click to Buy
No reason to even deal, at this point, with her amnesia and waking up next to a dead guy. A dead guy who everyone thinks SHE KILLED. She can't remember but she doesn't think she killed him. Except the hero assures her most people want to kill Victor so she might have.
There might be a ghost.
Here's an interesting fact about amnesia in a character.
You don't realize it but, as someone who is a big believer in weaving in backstory a bit at a time, a person with amnesia...……...has no backstory in her own head.
Other people can tell her about herself.
But she can never have the constant small thoughts like, When the lightning struck it was terrifying, she'd been afraid of storms since the night her parents died.
Click to Buy
You can't do that.
Because she DOESN'T REMEMBER HER PARENTS.
She can't say, "I'm doing this because I've loved history all my life."
She can't think, "I took this job because I was desperate for the money because--"
Anyway, I found it so frustrating that I finally just had her get her memory back waaaay ahead of schedule just so I could STOP STUMBLING OVER THE STUPID AMNESIA!
If you want to write an amnesia story (and who doesn't) be warned. But also, if you do it, HAVE FUN!

Let's talk FUN.
What's the most fun you've ever had writing a book.
What made you laugh, what sent chills up and down your spine.
Do you make yourself cry? That can be fun!
Or heartbreaking...tricky.

Tell me about the most fun you've ever had writing a book and every comment gets your name in a drawing for an ebook copy of Loving the Mysterious Texan

Loving the Mysterious Texas

The ebook is up and will release in a week. The paperback will be there, too, but no pre-order available on ebooks. Weird!
Garrison's Law goes gothic.

Amnesia, murder, treasure and ghosts.
A woman wakes up next to a dead man with no idea how she got there, who he is.....who SHE is.
Grey Devereau drags a terrified woman out of his cousin's bed...his very dead cousin. It looks for all the world like she killed him. But then everyone who knows Victor wants to kill him eventually. Grey included.
Lanny Cole, the young woman hired to research the history of the Devereau family, can't remember a thing.
Grey steps in with an alibi and Lanny realizes that if Grey is her alibi, then she's his. She decides to trust him, but then she's suffered a head injury. So she's probably making one stupid decision after another.
And then someone else dies. And a hurricane cuts them all off from help. And then someone else dies....
And the rumors of ghosts and treasure can't be true. Sure Grey saw the ghost, in fact, he's pretty sure the ghost saved his life as a child. But he was upset at the time and he doesn't believe in ghosts.
Chills and thrills abound in an old island home built by a loathsome pirate. He's not a Garrison, but when he gets in trouble, he turns to his old friend Case Garrison for help.
Garrison's Law just got spooky.

And just to be thorough, let me include a mention of my MARCH release, book #3 of the High Sierra Sweethearts series

The Unexpected Champion

The City Man and the Wild West Woman take turns saving each other's lives in the high stakes conclusion to the High Sierra Sweethearts Series.
City dweller John McCall never expected to be out in the High Sierras of 1868 on a wild-goose chase to find the Chiltons' supposedly lost grandson. But now that he's out here, things have gotten complicated, mostly due to wildcat Penny Scott. She's not like any woman he's ever met--comfortable in the woods, with a horse, and with a gun.

When Penny and John are taken against their will by a shadowy figure looking for evidence they don't have, both realize they've stumbled into something dangerous and complicated. With their friends and family desperately searching for them, Penny and John must make a daring escape.

When they emerge back into the real world, they are confronted with a kidnapper who just won't stop. They must bring a powerful, ruthless man to justice, even as this city man and country woman fight a very inconvenient attraction to each other.

  1. Hallo, Hallo Ms Connealy,

*waves!* I had wanted to celebrate the New Year's with you guys, but I ended up not being able to drop by during your lovely day-long party! I've been trying to kick a Winter virus to the curb (4wks and counting!) as I fell ill weeks before Christmas) -- I'm starting to feel like I might be making a bit of process this week to where it won't be plaguing me much longer! I wanted to drop by before another week slipped past,...

Give your lovely Mum a hug from me - I still cherish the fact I was able to have my great-grandmother in my life til she was 97!! It's such a gift to have our loved ones experience longevity but also, to have more memories to share lateron -- congratulations on the new birth, too! Such a sweet photo! I know my Mum is hoping she lives past 100,...

I think a memo must have gone out the past two years - there have been so many re-tells/re-imaginings of And Then There Were None! I've found so many!! My favourite thus far which I've read is Susan Spann's latest Hiro Hattori novel. Though, Anna Lee Huber did an impressive job with her first novel within her new series Verity Kent. This week I've learnt Vivian Conroy wrote a te-telling of this story called: A Testament to Murder. There are others out there, too. I think everyone loved the original!

Personally, I was spoilt on Ms Huber's version when I attempted to read Christie's and Ms Spann really took the aesthetics of the original but re-defined it into her own 16th Century Japan!

    ---

I love Gothic Suspense novels - there is something compelling about the atmosphere of the stories which grabs me the most! I love chilling reads like those even though I do lean on the INSPY side of the ledger for Suspense/Thriller lately (ie. LoveInspired Suspense or otherwise) - sometimes the mainstream variants I read a bit 'too chilling!' thought I have favourites in that market, too!

You brought up a good point - I need to read Du Maurier this year! I'm always in the dark about why she's beloved,...

    -----

The most fun I had writing a novel was during Nanowrimo 2008 - I literally was writing round the clock, catching small naps if I lost fuell to continue and had the best surprises by my family! One day Mum said "You really need a break!" (she was worried I'd crash/burn) She surprised me by taking me to see "Twilight" - note, I'm NOT a reader/fan of the series but sadly it was the only viable choice -- despite the fact the film was more than slightly outside my comfort zone, what it gave me was new fuell to create. The lush scenery, the open expanse of cinematography and that *view!* when Bella goes into the boughs of the tress? Now that was wicked brilliant!

I also remembering doughnuts, coffee and other such random surprise eats whilst I was lost in my own imagination and writing against the clock! I won that year and it broke my writer's block -- uniquely, this year, 2019 marks the first year I've returnt to my pen to write. I'm working on a different story than finishing my NanoNovel but I always remember what that experience gave me and how as a writer it allowed me to reclaim my pen in a way I never would have expected.

I am hoping this year will be equally as fun - as I re-attach myself into a method of 'writing' vs being the joyful tweeter and bookish happy book blogger!

    1. Jorie, what a great, interesting comment. First GET WELL SOON! I'm so sorry you've been sick. I had a cold (or something) a few years back and I coughed forever after I was well. I thought I was going to have to accept it as the new normal! But I did finally stop.
My daughter was just dealing with a nasty cold (or something) and I texted her--because she was avoiding everyone--and said "How are you?"
She said, "I'm dying of the plague but otherwise ok."

    2. I love that image of you writing 'around the clock'. That's just such a cool visual, up late, sleep in snatches. I love a book that drags me in that deep.

And Rebecca...well, it's very spooky. But I read it ONCE years ago. My real love of Gothic Romances goes to Phyllis Whitney. I've read everything she's written.
I suppose this book has more inspiration from HERE (though I read her years ago) than Du Maurier (hardest name to spell in the known universe. I had to look it up TWICE to include it in the post. (It's even worse than Connealy!) I think I've got it. But doubt I'll retain it.

    3. I've SEEN versions of And Then There Were None...but I can't remember reading them.
It'd up there with A Christmas Carol with people re-doing it. I love that there's a Japanese version set so long ago. How cool. Jorie thank you so much for stopping in. I hope you're mended soon. God bless you.

    4. Bless you, Ms Connealy!!

I appreciate the wishes of wellness, I've been resting so much you'd think I was replacing Sleeping Beauty! And, I *definitely!* relate to your daughter!! Whenever Mum or Dad ask me about how I'm feeling I tell them "its worse than the plague - you just can't get rid of it!" And, similar to you, I've had to grow used to this 'new normal' as you call it - *le sigh* - the latter half of this week is starting to turn round for me, thankfully patience is something I have in spades or I think I'd be properly miserable all way round!

So happy I gave you some smiles...

    5. Ooh, I don't feel so guilty then!! I had to keep looking at your last name to make sure I didn't add letters as names are harder for me to get the first/fourth/tenth time round (dyslexic writer) -- when it comes to Rebecca's author, I cheated and copied the name as you had it in the post! I wasn't even going to attempt to sort that one out myself! lol

You've blessed me again by saying I took you into my memory as it was lived, that was my intention and I am so thankful it resonated as I had hoped it might! You definitely 'saw' me from 2008 -- I might have more of those kinds of nights/days this year as I go into my new writerly rhythm as I've pulled overnights as a book blogger, so it would speak to reason I can do that as a writer once I ensconced myself into the story at hand!

*looking up Phyllis Whitney is there one I ought to read first?

    6. Thank you for this beautiful lift of spirit today, Ms Connealy! I've missed visiting with the Seekers and I knew if I was going to spend a twelvemonth focused on my writing, I needed to return. This has always been such a warm and friendly community and I am thankful to return!

I had forgotten to give you Ms Spann's title: "Trial on Mount Koya". I agree... on adaptations/retells, some of them are like good wine, each new version is delishly savoured.

I'm thankful you all remember me... its been so long! When I first came by Seekerville it was as a reader who had recently reclaimed her reading life; now I'm returning as a writer whose attempting to reclaim her pen for the second time. Thank you so kindly for these wonderful words of encouragement! I do as well. And, I'm thankful I've come back... so much goodness on this blog!

  2. Mary, congratulations on getting this series done! Go you!!!! That's so cool.... and a lot of hard work. I have always loved the wit and wisdom in your contemporary writing voice, so I'm happy dancing to see these brought to Amazon!

And you are sandwiched, for certain, but sending love and prayers for mom because she's the sweetest thing.... and that baby is gorgeous!

    Love the pic!

My kids got pics at JC Penney like at six months old.... Well, the first couple, anyway, and we think we MIGHT have pictures of the younger ones around here someplace.

I only wish I was kidding, LOL!

Again, congrats on this milestone and a big welcome to indie publishing!

I remember writing the scene between two sisters and crying while writing. The first time I read through on my first edit I was shocked by the tears since I knew it was coming. Looking forward to all your new books.

I know what you mean about the DMV -- why they make us wait loads of hours in those places is beyond me & then they get upset if you have to ask a Q and aren't in/out in 5 mins flat! Oyy. I'd have gone just to distract you and have a random lovely convo about books - those places are so sterile and everyone is in a bit of a bad mood (..wonder why) --

I wanted to add to what you said about writing across genres - I love it personally, as you get to explore different routes of the craft. Plus as a reader I love dancing through genres so my writerly life tends to do the same! lol I second trying my hand at Cosy Mysteries!!

  6. Mary, you make writing sound so fun!! I imagine being in your head while you're creating a story would be quite a wild ride! haha

I love laughing and crying while writing. It makes me feel like there's a chance the reader will too. Another thing I enjoy is reading back over a story later, when getting the final edits, and laughing out loud at something--feeling pleased because I don't even remember writing it. It's such an odd feeling and yet rewarding.

As for your question... I can't think of my most fun book to write. But each of them has had scenes that are really fun to write. I think in every book the most fun is writing that last section where you're barreling toward the end--toward the happy ending.

I will say I've had fun writing kids and teenagers because you never know what they might say!

    2. Did anyone else think of "The Jewel of the Nile" when you first mentioned "crying whilst writing"? I seriously cannot forget when Joan was finishing typing her manuscript and she was in a puddle of tears because she felt every inch of the story she had just finished writing?

Ms Tippens I experience this "writer amnesia" rather frequently - if I re-approach any of my manuscripts, even if hours/days later (if not years) I am truly engaged into the words and scenes but a part of myself goes "whom, whose the writer" even though I know it was "me" it just feels at times like after the words are spilt they are no longer part of us, they have fused into the story and have taken their own journey separate from us. If that makes sense?

  7. Mary, I agree. If the idiot goes up there alone, without a candle, with a murderer on the loose, well ... yeah. Your story sounds thrilling. Not usually a genre I like to read, but you have me intrigued.
I think one of the most fun stories I have written was when I crossed genres and tried my hand at a historical romance. It starts with the preacher getting married... to the wrong bride. Oops. :-)

  8. Hello Mary. Grace to you as you take care of your Mom. Congrats on the new grand girl. I'm excited to read your Gothic romance!!!

    1. Mom does look good. She broke her arm in a fall and now well, it's just such a handicap. She can't do anything. Her balance isn't good and she used a walker. Now she can't do that. They're working hard with her on Physical therapy and, of course, that arm needs to heal. Not easy with 90-year-old bones. And surgery has it's own downside. We're not finding any easy answers.

  10. The Mysterious Texan sounds like a great story, Mary.

I'm writing an amnesia story and having fun...maybe not as much fun as you had... :) Actually, I'm not laughing. I'm worried about my heroine's safety and whether she'll survive. She might not. I need to get to the end before I know what happens. :)

Just kidding. I do know what happens.

Spoiler alert: She does not die. Plus, this is a romance. She needs to have a happily ever after. Right?

Love that photo of your sweet little one. I'll babysit! :)

  11. We might have been talking about you at our ACFW meeting this morning...as in, when the story gets stuck, what do you do?

All of us knew. When the story gets stuck, you shoot someone. :-)

This new Garrison story sounds interesting! Amnesia? A ghost? A pirate treasure???

    Keep 'em coming!

  12. Hi Mary:

I must say that I often laugh when writing as all my books could be called comedies or funny satire.

I'd get into trouble laughing so hard at times that my wife would come from rooms away to tell me to be quiet as she was on the phone!

My longest sustained funniest stint of writing, over a month and a half, was writing about an author who wrote a book so well her characters actually did come alive. One character who came alive had been killed off by the author! He managed to come into our real world with a vow to kill that author.

Trying to find the real author in our real world took many oddball adventures. One of the characters who also came alive into our real world was sent to track down the rouge character bent on mayhem. Both fictional characters have many problems adapting to the real world (like having to go to the bathroom).

Anyway the killed off character, our villian, accidently discovers that he has great first hand knowledge of western conditions over 120 years ago and a flair for fiction. He starts writing westerns and screenplays and gets quite rich. He doesn't want to go back to a fiction world where is was dead.

Well at last he finds out where the author who killed him off lives and goes there to scout out the situation…all with the good character, our hero, trying to catch him and stop him in his plan for revenge. (Btw, the hero wound up with the villian's wife after he was killed off.)

When the villain sneaks into town where the author lives on a massive Texas ranch, measured in sections and not acres, he meets the author's daughter in a small café. They talk and fine they have a lot in common. She is a big fan of Western history and he has lived it all his life. (He actually is a loveable villian.)

Since this is also a romance, the villain marries the author's daughter and with his newly acquired wealth buys the even bigger neighboring ranch that the author's husband has been coveting for his entire life.

The husband and his new son-in-law, soon become best friends but the author is suspicious as there is almost no information on the internet about the villain's past! He also seems to be spookily familiar. The more the family loves the villian, the more the author dislikes him.

Finally, the villain moves to kill the author but the hero character shows up just in time to save her. But not by stopping the killer physically. He tells the villain that the author killed a fictional character and it would be morally wrong to punish her by killing her as a real person. The villain agrees not to kill her but to write her into one of his books and kill her there as a fictional character.

In the villain's best selling book about this situation, just to be ironic, he ties the fictional author to the railroad tracks in his fictional small town. "She'll hate having a cliche death." But the track is really just a railroad siding. At the climax the train stops just short of the author and the villain decides that the scare she got would be enough revenge. Besides his fictional wife was now older and meaner than a stepped on rattler. The hero decides not to go back to his fictional world and now mean wife stays real and becomes the foreman on the villain's huge ranch. HEA!

This was a nano book, 84,500 words and it was the funniest six weeks I've ever spent writing! And it was 100% pantsered!

  13. Wow I want to read. If you ever form a street team. I hope I'd get to be on it.

One of the stories I wrote has a couple forced to be married. Their lives are in danger and all kinds of evil lurks. He owns a private jet. This story didn't make it past the first round in a Love Inspired contest. However I kept writing. I believe I need a stronger beginning.

  15. This sounds like such a fun book. As a reader, I love when humor is part of the storyline. I just finished The Lieutenant's Bargain by Regina Jemmings and I laughed out loud many times. I even mentioned in my review that I could picture it as a madcap comedy movie.
Blessings with your busy, hectic life!

  16. Hi Mary:

I was curious about your new release, "The Mysterious Texas," wondering if there was a second Texas that no one knew about. When I clicked on the link I was taken to a strange page headed "This Site Cannot Be Reached" and the link address seemed to be two type pages long!

This is the first link in the post near the picture of "Loving the Texas Lawman". You might want to check this out.

I haven't read a Gothic novel in ten years. Your's would be a great first in so long!

  17. I'm not a writer, but do enjoy gothic romance. I also enjoyed Phyllis Whitney's books and those by Victoria Holt. There is a box of old gothic paperbacks somewhere in the sunroom perfect for grabbing on a gloomy day. I don't read gothic often, but they are fun and it is nice to have them around when the mood strikes.
