Christian Fiction Readers Retreat: A Road Less Traveled

A thoughtful post by Seeker Ruth Logan Herne

Note that I used the word "thoughtful" because today I am not scolding anyone. I'm not lifting a brow, reminding them that writing is a job and they should just do it, nor am I exalting how much I love my job (but I do!!!! To the moon and back except that would be highly unlikely for a non-astronaut like me), nor am I waving pompoms to get your attention and cheer you on because honestly... you don't need that, darlings.

Nope, today is dedicated to Seeker Annie (of the Just Commonly blog) Seeker Carrie Booth Schmidt (of the Reading Is My Superpower blog) and Beth Erin (of the Faithfully Bookish blog) and posthumously to our dear friend Bonnie Roof, whose goal was to not only see Christian fiction get the love it deserved, but to hook up readers and authors, something that used to be done quite commonly by publishers before sales dipped and the world began buying online and Amazon developed the biggest, easiest (although don't be fooled, they are not the cheapest) shopping site ever... and those special moments that publishers had arranged for gatherings and get-togethers became economically unfeasible unless you were a New York Times selling author.

Bonnie saw this gap, recognized it, talked about it with several authors and bloggers, and her dream became reality when these three Seekers jumped on board to make it happen. With Annie shouldering the bulk of the heavy lifting with her to-die-for adorable husband "Darcy", they have hosted three amazingly wonderful events... events that brought such joy to Bonnie's heart as her body waged war against cancer, and events that brought joy to authors and readers and gave us a forum to laugh and talk and discuss all kinds of things in a prayer-filled, joyful atmosphere with absolutely no agenda other than celebrating authors, readers, faith, hope and love.

They set a precedent that made a difference, so I wanted to use today's post to say how grateful I am-- how grateful so many of us are-- for the opportunity they offered. They showed no favoritism, they worked hard to cross all lines of publishers and indie authors, they were unafraid to broach topics like diversity and sexuality in stories, the "how far is too far" question that varies in answer from publisher to publisher. But in the end, they always made sure that the glory and honor was God's as it should be.

So thank you my dear beloved friends. You are good and faithful servants and I am so appreciative of what you did! You amaze me.

I'm posting some pics of my trip down.... it was a beautiful day, filled with joy, and then to gather with writers and readers for two full days, to have the opportunity to help the gals get stuff ready, and to share time with them was priceless.

Beth Jamison (daughter and free-lance editor) and I had the very best time! No one could have done it better.

Beautiful grotto of the Women at the Cross here in Maryland at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Shrine

We had a lovely trip down from New York, through Pennsylvania and Maryland... Look at that sky! And this beautiful statue grouping of the women at the foot of the cross touched our hearts. They walked the walk. They didn't run and hide like so many others.... they stayed by Christ's side although I can't even imagine how difficult that must have been. So much strength and honor in this visual.

And we found blossoming trees, so that brings us hope because we won't see them for a couple of weeks in northern New York, but we know that the spring roll-out is coming our way!

And then this...

Beth took this picture after I climbed the steps. There was a spot for kneeling and/or a spot for sitting to pray. Think. Repose. And that's what Annie and the crew brought to this weekend retreat, a sincere love for prayer, faith and hope that wound its way through everything. The reminder that it's good to stop and pray....

And aren't we blessed to be in a country where we can do that?

Yes! So let's celebrate with a giveaway.... I have some lovely books that Beth and I got duplicates of! One from Karen Barnett and a beautiful Love Inspired written by Lisa Carter ...

Lisa Carter is one of the cutest, funniest people on the planet, by the way. And she looks so innocent!!!! :)

Leave a comment below to be entered, my pretties and once again: Huge and hearty thanks to Annie, Carrie, Beth, Bonnie and all their posse for three of the best writerly weekends I've ever had.

Wonderful readers, authors, editors, bloggers, etc. The whole experience was delightful and I truly appreciate all of the hard work & dedication that it took to pull this off, and pull it off so beautifully!

Thank you, ladies, for blessing our lives with CFRR.

    2. Lee-Ann, isn't it lovely how they have the stone kneeler there... and a stone seat across the landing in case you'd rather sit. And there was much to pray about because life has some rough turns and twists, doesn't it? We pray. God hears. And we move forward.

  5. Ruthy, I LOVE the Women At the Cross. They never gave up. He respected women, so different from the false gods of the time who used them. I cannot imagine what was going through their heads -- but whatever it was, Easter Morning made up for it.
    SO powerful...
And a good post. The main reason I write now is to glorify God and connect with readers. It's not about the money because there isn't any, and besides I have enough. It's not about fame and glory, I would actually cringe at being mauled by strangers. It's about the story, and sharing it with as many people as possible. I don't have readers yet, but I am so looking forward to that relationship.
Thank you for a great post. I love this, but I also love your drill-sergeant mode. Somebody has to do it.

  15. Hey, Ruthy, although I was not able to attend this year, I totally concur with you and this post in my gratitude to Bonnie, Annie, Carrie, and Beth for all they have done to encourage and uplift Christian fiction. It is a true ministry that has blessed me as an author more than I can say.

I plan to attend the next one in St. Louis, God willing, since it is so close to where I live, so God bless CFRR AND ACFW for making that possible for this Midwest author.

Annie, Carrie, and Beth -- love you guys to pieces and look forward to seeing you in St. Loo. I have subscribed in the past for your newsletter, but have never received it, so I am reconfirming my info on the subscribe button. And I don't think anyone knows how ACFW will select participating authors until they announce it.

The best thing was how absolutely delightful this one was for the readers... for their friends and daughters... and to see some new readers and even some REPEAT OFFENDERS! Oh my stars, what a blessing that so many of them have come across the country multiple times.

    1. Pat Jeanne, that image and the Biblical passages about the women who stayed the course, who walked that walk, always inspire me. Mary's courage as the mother of God... and the mother of her little baby Jesus... helps me to be a better mother. A better soldier. A better person. Her example shines for all of us because I cannot even begin to imagine how horrid that must have been...

But how beautiful that she didn't let her precious son die alone... despite the fear and grief.

She and the other women stayed.

That says so very much to me.

  19. Hi Ruth:

When I first read your post last night, I felt as if I had taken part in a most beautiful prayer. Then when I first saw the women at the cross, there immediately flashed before my eyes the famous photo of the Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima.

The courage of the men who had risked their lives and taken enemy lives to defend their country was mirrored by the courage of the women who understood the value of all lives best because they had given birth to all on both sides.

What made the experience so similar to Iwo Jima was the absence of the two other crosses and the distant viewpoint which made it impossible to tell if the women were real or part of the statue.

And I thought at that point, "blessed are the living for they have believed but not yet seen."

Perhaps, with such events as you described, the believers have 'seen'.

    1. Oh, Vince.

      You made me cry.

That's how I feel, too. That this statue (and that one, by relation) show the true sacrifice behind the goal...

And the amazing human courage it takes to be in the moment... and of the moment.

      Thank you, my precious friend.

    1. Oh, Connie, aren't we blessed to have the internet and social media and we can be part of things even if we're not there in person?

You know I could never afford to go to the big conferences. There wasn't money for that, and I just made the time home pay off by getting extra writing work done... which might seem silly to some, but it paid off in the end and I cannot say it's hurt me at all to be an infrequent attendee.

I love seeing people... but I love being home, too. And having my work time laid out for me.

But these reader retreats I've loved because I'm not expected to schmooze anyone. :) I just get to be me and meet people.

      BEST EVER!!!!

    1. A hearty "AMEN" to all of that.... It all begins with the love of books, doesn't it? Of hearing stories and longing to tell them.

It's born in us, and what a blessing!

And also yes to the work involved. Carrie, Annie and Beth aren't afraid of hard work, but it's a year-long process to facilitate this kind of thing, and what I loved was the genuine give-and-take between readers and authors. That authors didn't disappear from the room when their part was over... and that's a huge difference from other functions where authors put in their sixty minutes and then you don't see them again.

This is the best merging of like-minded folks and that's what makes it so special.

THANK YOU, again, sweet Ruthy! I love your thoughtfulness.
