SECOND SUNDAY IN ADVENT
Jordan River, Israel, presumed spot where John the Baptist baptized Christ. |
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ the Son of God.
As it
is written in Isaiah the prophet:
Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you;
he will prepare your way.
A voice of one crying out in the desert:
“Prepare the way of the Lord,
make straight his paths.”
John the Baptist appeared in the desert
proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.
People of the whole Judean countryside
and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem
were going out to him
and were being baptized by him in the Jordan River
as they acknowledged their sins.
John was clothed in camel’s hair,
with a leather belt around his waist.
He fed on locusts and wild honey.
And this is what he proclaimed:
“One mightier than I is coming after me.
I am not worthy to stoop and loosen the thongs of his sandals.
I have baptized you with water;
he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.”
Mark
1:1-8

ReplyDeletePlease pray for my cousin Gordon Massie. He disappeared coming home from work 3 days ago. His truck and cell phone were found but no sign of him. Thank you.

DeleteLucy, we're praying. So frightening! God protect Gordon!
DeleteThanks for this moving message this morning. Loved the photo. My wife, Linda, always had the dream of being baptized in the Jordan river. Some years ago her church took a tour to Israel and her pastor did baptized her there in a full-immersion traditional manner. It was a totally moving religious experience. I had to stay home and take care of business but I pray that anyone reading this who wants to be baptized in the Jordan, find a way. For the believer it is a lifetime religious achievement. Wonders can happen. Blessings.
ReplyDeleteVince, that is very cool your wife was baptized there. My son was baptized as a baby but with water from the Jordan river that my sister brought back from a trip there and gave to us.
DeleteHow special for your wife, Vince, and for your son, Sandy. Everything about our trip to the Holy Land was so special. I treasure the memories!
