THE FOURTH OF JULY
SUNDAY SCRIPTURE FOR JULY 4, 2021
Jesus departed from there
and came to his native place, accompanied by his disciples.
When the sabbath came he began to teach in the
synagogue,
and many who heard him were astonished.
They said, “Where did this man get all this?
What kind of wisdom has been given him?
What mighty deeds are wrought by his hands!
Is he not the carpenter, the son of Mary,
and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and
Simon?
And are not his sisters here with us?”
And they took offense at him.
Jesus said to them,
“A prophet is not without honor except in his
native place
and among his own kin and in his own house.”
So he was not able to perform any mighty deed
there,
apart from curing a few sick people by laying his
hands on them.
He was amazed at their lack of faith.

Almighty God, We make our earnest prayer that Thou wilt keep the United States in Thy holy protection; that thou wilt incline the hearts of the citizens to cultivate a spirit of subordination and obedience to government, and entertain a brotherly affection and love for one another and for their fellow-citizens of the United States at large. And finally that Thou wilt most graciously be pleased to dispose us all to do justice, to love mercy and to demean ourselves with that charity, humility and pacific temper of mind which were the characteristics of the Divine Author of our blessed religion without a humble imitation of whose example in these things we can never hope to be a happy nation. Grant our supplication, we beseech Thee, through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

We can learn so much from that scripture, can't we? How jealousy and doubt skewered a people from being able to see the wonder of Christ with them... and yet so obviously human!
