Julie Lessman is BACK and she's writing mysteries!

SURVEY/GIVEAWAY: CAN A COZY MYSTERY BE TOO COZY?

By Julie Lessman

HELLO, SEEKERVILLE! It is soooo good to be back with you, both as an alum and a guest blogger. When I first became one of the original Seekers way back when (uh, we won’t go into how far back that was, all right?), I always liked to do teaching blogs because there was SO much I had to learn as an author, that I truly appreciated when seasoned authors shared their insights.

Ahem.

But … I just wrote my very first “cozy mystery,” so when it comes to romantic suspense, trust me, I am anything but “seasoned.” Which is why I am asking for input from you—truly seasoned readers—in a quick survey that will not only enter you to win your choice of a signed paperback copy of my new cozy mystery, The Secret of Emerald Cottage OR an e-copy along with three other e-copies of my books, BUT a character named after you in my next book as well, A Hope and a Prayer (book 2 in The Cousins O’Connor series), which releases early next year.

So, I need your help. Because you see, I was the one arguing with my husband because I did not want to watch the Hallmark mystery movies since I like the accent mark on romance, not mystery. But when we ran out of regular Hallmark romance movies, I was forced to watch things like—horror of horrors—Aurora Teagarden and Murder 101 (can anyone say, “hubba-hubba, Polaha-ha-ha,” as my hubby calls him?).  And you know what? I found out that I actually really liked them!

But … (knee-knocking here) … could I write one??

Okay, sure, maybe I can write a pretty mean kissing scene (I invite you to check out the KISSES, KISSES, KISSES tab of my website to see how “mean”) because back in the day when CBA kissing scenes were far tamer than mine, some even tossed the nickname, “The Kissing Queen” my way. But I’m happy to say that today in the CBA, there’s an entire royal kingdom of “Kissing Queens”—thank God!—many of whom are right here on Seekerville.

And no question that after writing 25 “passionate” family-saga romance books, I can certainly share a thing or two about how to get more passion power into your prose, such as in this Seeker blog I wrote entitled, “More BANG for Your Buck: Making Your Words Work for You!”

But romantic suspense?

Gulp. Not easily, trust me. Suddenly I found myself happier when I was writing romance scenes over the mystery ones because, hey, romance is my lifeblood as an author. So what did I do? The only thing I could do—I ditched the 80/20 formula for 50/50.

So … are you ready for 50/50? There’s only way to find out. By taking the following survey:

SURVEY:

1.)    Are you primarily a romance reader or a suspense reader?

2.)    If both, what percentage of each?

3.)    If you are a die-hard suspense reader, would 50/50 turn you off?

4.)    If you are a diehard romance reader, would 50/50 be enough? 😍

Just copy and paste the questions above into your comment and answer each one. If you do, you will automatically be entered into my contest to win your choice of a signed paperback copy of The Secret of Emerald Cottage OR an e-copy along with three other e-copies of my books, AND a character named after you in my next book, A Hope and a Prayer (book 2 in The Cousins O’Connor series), which releases early next year..

EXTRA GIVEAWAY:

Watch the “killer” video/trailer below that my talented hubby made for The Secret of Emerald Cottage, let me know what you think via comment below, and I’ll enter you to win one of three e-copies of my very first mystery.

So, what is The Secret of Emerald Cottage all about? I’m glad you asked. Here’s a short blurb:

COZY ROMANCE MEETS NOT-SO-COZY MURDER.

An international soccer-star playboy butts heads with his aunt’s pretty prude of a nurse when he discovers not only did somebody try to murder his Aunt Lilly, but her Emerald Cottage home contains a secret that might just kill them all.

And HERE’S the “killer” VIDEO/TRAILER!

For a sneak peek at the first chapter AND more pix of the smokin’ hot hero, hop on over to my BLOG. Then let the survey begin and GOOD LUCK!

Hugs,

Julie

  7. Julie, I didn't answer the survey, but 50/50 is fine for me. I have already pre-ordered so no need for putting me in the drawing. And I love the Hallmark Mysteries. My husband and I started watching them a year or so ago and I am recording all the marathons the channel has. (And I agree about Polaha-ha-ha! He is my favorite). It is so good to see you back here.

Thanks SO much for pre-ordering, my friend, and I hope you enjoy it.

  11. Julie! I am so happy for you! When I saw your name come up on the Seekerville calendar, I was thrilled, and couldn't wait to see what you had to say. Boy am I shocked! You write such perfect romance, I can't imagine you changing a thing. But, I am sure you will excel at it, and have a great time along the way.
BTW-My granddaughter, Cheyenne, was over the top with the personalized name plates you sent for your books. Thank you so much. Now, help me pray that between God and your fictional characters, it will be a big influence in her life.

1.) Are you primarily a romance reader or a suspense reader?
Mostly romance, but occasionally feel the need for a good Mary Higgins Clark experience.

2.) If both, what percentage of each?
    65% Romance / 35% Suspense

3.) If you are a die-hard suspense reader, would 50/50 turn you off?
Absolutely not. My husband calls the ones with romance mixed, a 'chick flick', but I crave a mix.

4.) If you are a diehard romance reader, would 50/50 be enough? 😍
    Yes, most definitely.

I do pray and wish the best for you, my friend. We need more people like you to help young people stay interested in God's goodness...not preachy or judgemental, just good clean, very interesting reads, that they can apply to their own lives.

Both. I need balance. Susan May Warren does a really good job with balance in most of her books.

2.) If both, what percentage of each?
That's hard to answer. It would most likely depend on the story line. 50/50 is a safe bet.

Definitely not. I love all types of books and I enjoy a balance. Some romance with mystery, or romance with political thriller etc..

I'm thinkin' this may not be the book for you since there's a bit of a chase scene, but probably not up to your danger standards! ;) And I have no doubt someone with your nose for sniffing out who-dunits will nail this one right out the gate, but hopefully there will be one or two small things that will catch you by surprise. :)

Primarily I'm a romance reader, but always love a good suspense.

Ah 60% romance, and 40% suspense maybe more romance.

3.) If you are a die-hard suspense reader, would 50/50 turn you off?
No, a good romance suspense needs a good balance of each.

4.) If you are a diehard romance reader, would 50/50 be enough? 😍
I'm a sucker for a good romance, especially Julie's, so yes and no. Like yes it would be enough but I won't complain if there's a little more romance.

  35. JULIE!!!! I've missed you. I'm about 99% romance and, like you, I've resisted the Hallmark mystery movies, despite having watched just about every Hallmark movie multiple times. Who knows, perhaps it'll be adapted for a Hallmark Mystery movie. ;)

And we're kindred Hallmark sisters, it seems, since you've resisted the mystery movies too! Well, as far as my hubby and I are concerned, the best Hallmark mystery movies are all the Murder 101 series (with pretty Polaha-ha, hubba-hubba!) and the Aurora Teagarden series.

Thanks for watching the trailer, my friend, and if you would be interested in a Seeker complimentary e-copy of The Secret of Emerald Cottage, just let me know your email address via private FB message, and I will get one out to you pronto, okay? No pressure. And that goes for any Seeker who wants one. :)

  36. 1.) Are you primarily a romance reader or a suspense reader?I enjoy reading both but prefer Suspense. However, a good suspense novel always has a romantic thread in it.

2.) If both, what percentage of each? Well, I do ready both but probably 70% suspense 30% romance. So if it's a romance author I like, I read them but don't search for pure romance.

3.) If you are a die-hard suspense reader, would 50/50 turn you off? Nope

4.) If you are a diehard romance reader, would 50/50 be enough? I always like a little suspense even in a romance; afterall, there is always the suspense of whether the guy is going to get the girl or vice-a versa.

Life has not been easy with me after my marriage was broken when my husband filled for a divorced but I thank God for using LORD ZAKUZA who's like a God on Earth to get my broken marriage restored with his powerful spell. I suffered for depression for 6 months but today, I am so happy for getting to know LORD ZAKUZA for his spell has really made me to believe that of a truth spells are real and they work. I adhered to every bit of instructions given to me by LORD ZAKUZA for he promised me that he will make me happy and proud and really, all that happened and my husband came back to me with his knees on the ground begging me for forgiveness within 48 hours after I got in touch with him and now we are perfectly bonded again for life.
