A Day of Mercy--A lesson in toughness--and prizes

 Hey Seekervillagers

Well, I'm asking for a day of mercy.

I've been sick for the last week.

Remember when a person used to get a cold and you'd have a cold?

Now, it's a cold, or the flu (that was not respiratory when I was a kid, it was a stomach virus to us). Or Covid, which sure, why not?

Anyway I've spent the last week a useless lump...which is not permission to not write, so I've kept at it. But writing this blog is tough.

I've considered putting up a picture of myself but decided to spare you all the horror.

As I type this on Sunday, I haven't left the house since last Monday. And I'm almost feeling well enough that it's bothering me.

Yes, that's right, I might step outside.

Exciting.

The lesson I guess I want to share today is, the writing is always the priority.

Whatever else gives, you know...food, showers, reading, human interaction...the writing is the priority.

So when times get tough, dig deep, do it. Even bad Covid-laden writing (yes, lets say I had Covid, I don't know, I didn't go to the doctor or get tested, what's the point unless I feel I need medical intervention, but calling it Covid is way more dramatic than a cold)...bak to the point...even bad Covid-laden writing can be edited, fixed, deleted, but you can fix a blank page.

To make up for my utter lameness, for which I don't apologize because I'm sick, I'm giving away a signed copy of Forged in Love and two $10 Amazin gift cards. Leave a comment abut whether you've had Covid or not, or about a time you were tough enough to do what you had to do, to get your name in the drawing.

Also today at 9:30 Central Time, I'm doing a live Facebook event. Come and talk to me. You won't be able to hear my raspy voice on the internet.   Lots of prizes there, too. (7) Jessie Gussman Reader Chat | Facebook

  1. I'm sorry you're not feeling well and I hope you get better soon! I haven't had covid (yet) and even writing that feels superstitiously like a bad idea :)

  2. Sorry you're not feeling well. I hope you get better soon. I had "the 'rona" last year. It wasn't pretty. I'm not sure if I wrote or not. Probably not. Currently, my husband and I are taking turns helping my daughter with her 4 week old baby boy. Makes my heart very happy to help, but this 60 year old body isn't built for sleepless nights.

  3. I'm sorry you have been sick all week, Mary. I did have Covid last September--one week after attending a concert at the State Fair. I wasn't very sick with it, though. Just had to stay home for a week. I hope you feel better soon.

    1. Sandy I like thinking I have covid. I'd hate to believe I'd let a mere cold knock me down this hard. I actually stepped out onto my porch yesterday. It was the first time i'd stuck my nose outside in a week. It was WARM

  4. I am so sorry to hear you have been feeling unwell :( My family had covid at the beginning of 2022, although thankfully it was just the omicron variant. I admire your ability to write while sick, as I only do that when I really have to (like if I have a paper due that week for school or something...).
Something tough I did was training/applying for a writing tutor position at my university. To get the job, I had to take two intensive, 8-week classes, each difficult on its own but taken together were way harder than I had expected. Yet by relying completely on God's strength, I not only survived the classes, but thrived in them. Two months later, I got the writing tutor position and almost a year later, I still love it <3

Thank you for this opportunity to enter the giveaway! I hope you feel better soon.

    1. Ellen, wow, good for you. And hard. Plus WRITING. I'll bet you learned a lot and now, when you teach, you are learning more.

  5. I am sorry to hear you are feeling unwell. I haven't had Covid, surprisingly. My husband got it but the kids and I were spared, but I have been dealing with insomnia recently and it has kicked my backside. Got lots of praying done, but not a whole lot of sleep. Prayers for your continued recovery, Mary.

    1. Gena, well, to my knowledge I haven't had Covid either. My daughter thought I should go to the doctor just out of curiosity but that seems like a lame reason to go to the doctor.

  6. I'm so sorry you've been sick. That's the pits. I've done the Covid thing twice now, and honestly, that should be enough for any person right? Probably the toughest writing time I've had was writing while caring for my MIL at the end of her cancer battle, and writing when my husband diagnosed with cancer.

    1. TWICE???? I knew about once. You went to the doctor and got some kind of treatment right? And felt like it helped. So maybe I should have gone?

  7. OH, Mary, I am so sorry you are ill; will be praying for you! Thankfully neither hub or I have had covid or stuff. But we have realllly sheltered in the past 2 yrs. Since we are older and have limitations anyway, we just stay home. Our dau. gets all our meds/groceries. I am so glad I love to read (27 books so far this year) and hub loves tv.
Please enter me in your drawing. Get well soon! Thanks.

  9. So sorry you've been sick, Mary! I've had Covid. The whole family had it. You know you've been sick when you start to feel better and realize how sick you were lol. But by then, what's the point of doing anything about it? You're on the mend by then, right? Hope you're feeling better! And so true, no matter what, you can't edit a blank page.

  10. Mary, sweetpea! You sound awful! I'm sorry the bug has you down. Call me old-fashioned, but I'm calling it a cold. Unless, of course, you don't beat this thing soon. Take a day off. You deserve it.

    Love you! -audra

  12. I'm sorry you are sick. I was sick last week too with some respiratory virus. I took a couple of days of sick leave (on days 3 and 4 of being sick since it started on a weekend). I didn't want to return too early since I work at a school so I went to the doctor and found out I wasn't contagious. I went back to work Wednesday, lost my voice on Thursday. I still have a cough but am feeling a bit better. We didn't have school today so I haven't talked all day so don't know if I have a voice or not. It's been coming and going the last couple of days. All that to say, I understand that sometimes you've got to suck it up and get to work even when you don't feel the best. I hope you'll be well soon.

  15. I am not kidding. Ever since moving to Indiana back in March of 2020, I have had Covid at least three times. The first case was major but not bad enough for the hospital and the others were just mild annoyances, thank God. Put me down for the gift cards. I have a book spending problem and my mom is tired of me not keeping track of a sort of budget with her card. Lol.

  16. Hi Mary, I hope that by now you're feeling better. Yes, I've had Covid 2 times and the second time was after I had the original 2 vaccines and the 1st booster. The first time was during Christmas, 2020 and it took me several months to feel fully recuperated. The lethargy was unreal!!

  19. Mary, I hope you feel better soon! To answer your questions... I had shortness of breath the same week 2 people in the same house as me tested positive for Covid, so what are the odds I had something else? But thankfully it wasn't severe, and only lasted a few weeks for me. Last year, we got a high maintenance cat, and even on days I feel under the weather, I still need to make sure she gets fed and gets her meds on time.
